Connect Fine Structure to Grok

Grok groups everything external under Connectors, and Custom is the entry that accepts an arbitrary MCP server. Point it at the Fine Structure endpoint, finish the sign in, and Grok discovers the tools and offers them in conversation. On a Business or Enterprise team the connector has to be provisioned in the xAI console first.

Before you start

• A Fine Structure account on the free tier or above.
• A Grok account with access to the connectors page at grok.com/connectors.
• On Grok Business and Enterprise, a team admin with Team Read-Write permission has to add the connector in the console before members can connect it.
• xAI's docs do not spell out which individual Grok plans expose the Custom option, so if you do not see Custom, check your plan or ask your team admin.

Step by step

1. Go to grok.com/connectors.
2. Select New Connector.
3. Choose Custom.
4. Enter https://finestructure.ai/api/mcp as the MCP server URL.
5. Complete the authentication step when prompted, which signs you in to Fine Structure and authorizes the connector.
6. Let Grok finish discovering the tools your server exposes, which then become available in conversations.
7. Business and Enterprise only: a team admin first signs in at console.x.ai, selects the team, opens Grok Business > Connectors, and adds the connector there. Members can then connect it from grok.com/connectors.
8. Ask Grok to list your Fine Structure apps as a live check.

What to watch out for

• xAI requires the MCP server to be reachable over the public internet. Fine Structure is a hosted public HTTPS endpoint, so none of the tunneling guidance in xAI's docs applies to this connector.
• xAI's connectors documentation does not enumerate the supported authentication mechanisms in detail, and only says to complete any required authentication. In practice Fine Structure offers OAuth 2.1 with dynamic client registration, so there is nothing for you to paste.
• If your Grok build cannot complete an OAuth handshake, create a scoped token in the Fine Structure Studio MCP Server tab and use it as an Authorization Bearer credential instead.
• Connector management for teams lives in the xAI console rather than in the Grok chat interface, which is where access controls and per connector settings are adjusted.
• Compared with Claude, the setup is equally short but the vendor documentation is thinner, so plan requirements are the part most likely to surprise you.

Questions people ask

Do I need a Business plan to use a custom connector in Grok?

Not necessarily for yourself, but xAI's documentation is explicit that on Business and Enterprise a team admin must add the connector in the console before members can use it. For individual plans xAI does not publish a list, so treat the presence of the Custom option on your own connectors page as the answer.

Does Grok need a tunnel to reach Fine Structure?

No. Tunneling in xAI's docs is for MCP servers running on your own machine. Fine Structure runs at a public HTTPS address, so you paste the URL directly.

Can I limit what Grok is allowed to change?

Yes, from the Fine Structure side. Create a read only or build scoped token in the Studio MCP Server tab and use that instead of a full access sign in, then widen it once you trust the setup.
